WRG 34 - Wells Improvement District

Collection Dates, Series #1 - #3 1967 - 1995

Historical Data

The Wells Improvement District was formed after all major lode mining in the Wells area shut down in 1967.  It's purpose is to administer the day to day operations of the Wells Townsite, previously ran by the Cariboo Gold Quartz Mining Company.  It was the first, and remains the only elected body within the village of Wells.

Some of the various duties that the Improvement District has performed include the administration of the Centennial Hall, the maintenance and running of the water, garbage collection and sewage systems, and the upkeep associated with the street lights.  As well, the WID has also been involved in numerous campaigns pertaining to the well-being of the area, such as the failed soil remediation project, and the protection of the Wells-Barkerville corridor from extensive logging.  Over the years the maintenace of the water and sewer and garbage collection has been handed over to the Cariboo Regional District.  At present, 1997 the WID looks after the Centennial Hall, and the street lights.  It remains the only elected body and is still involved in various initiatives regarding the well-being of the town.

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of several provincial government laws, village By-Laws and ordinances, Duties of elected staff, official community plan, information on affiliated agencies, minutes from affiliated organizations' meetings, files about buildings, objects, and places, from portions of the surrounding area, assorted correspondence, minutes from monthly and annual meetings, project information, information on issues pertinent to the Improvement District, applications for building and demolitions permits, copies of land titles, land assessments, land referrals, applications for the cancellation of interior lot lines, forms for the transfer of fee simple, real property transfer records, miscellaneous land records, land records for Improvement District property, garbage operation records, sewer operation records, water operation records, summary of tax forms, annual financial statements, bank statements, receipts and invoices, time slips, clerical forms, administration forms, janitorial catalogue, and miscellaneous informational books.  While the material in this collection covers a period from 1967 to 1995, the bulk of it spans from the mid-19701s to the late 1980's.
